Stelson Campaign Punches Back at Department of Homeland Security Over Allegation

Say this for the Janelle Stelson campaign. They are not taking this sitting down.

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a press release announcing the arrest of what it called “illegal alien from Nigeria who, while working as a canvasser for a congressional campaign, was arrested for exposing himself in public in Pennsylvania.”

Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe, illegally in the country from Nigeria, was arrested in East Pennsboro Township for indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. He pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charge.

The Stelson campaign fired back immediately, as campaign manager Alma Baker wrote, “This individual is not and has never been employed by the Janelle Stelson campaign. If he is an illegal immigrant who committed a crime he should be deported. We never heard of him prior to the news of his arrest. We are grateful to law enforcement for acting swiftly to arrest him.”

Activist Scott Presler had identified Igbojekwe as “a canvasser” for Stelson, saying campaign flyers were found in his vehicle. He also questioned why the candidate was “hiring canvassers that live in Aurora, Colorado?”

There is no record of any payments by the campaign to Igbojekwe in campaign filings with the FEC.

The DHS press release cited a New Jersey-based outlet called the “Shore News Network” as its source of local reporting. A 2019 feature report about Phil Stilton, the editor of the “Shore News Network,” notes how the media company seeks to be “the Fox News of New Jersey.”

Stelson is in the throes of one of the most hotly-contested congressional races in the nation in Pennsylvania’s 10th against incumbent Republican Scott Perry, a member and former chair of the House Freedom Caucus. The Cook Political Report With Amy Walter moved its rating in the contest to Lean Democrat earlier today.

“We are likely to take legal action to combat the blatant lies and coordinated misinformation campaign,” said Baker in a statement. The campaign has also sent out cease-and-desist letters to a number of news outlets that reported DHS’s claims as fact.

The nonpartisan watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) also filed an official complaint with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel. The complaint alleges that federal officials violated the Hatch Act, which strictly prohibits government and law enforcement employees from using their official positions to influence an election.

“It’s unbelievable that Janelle Stelson would employ an illegal alien to work on a Congressional campaign, let alone a pervert who exposed himself in public,” said ICE Deputy Director Charles Wall. “Every single day, the men and women of DHS are working hard to target and remove dangerous illegal aliens like this sicko from our communities. The Trump Administration will always put the safety of the American people first.”

It is expected that the office “will open a file” in response.

Time will tell if the incident will have a lasting impact on the PA-10 race.

The Freedom Caucus Fund, a hybrid PAC dedicated to electing and supporting House Freedom Caucus members, released a digital ad on Thursday calling Igbojekwe a “Nigerian illegal alien campaigning for Democrat Janelle Stelson.”
