Somebody's pet emu escaped their property in Santa Cruz earlier this week, and CHP officers were called in to help after the big bird was darting through traffic.
"Not your average day on the road!" says CHP-Santa Cruz in a Facebook post.
The agency said that they received calls about the emu in the area of Harper Street and 17th Avenue several days ago, "running in and out of the road" and "walking into traffic."
"While we often deal with dogs, cats, deer, and occasionally birds, an emu was unexpected!" the agency says.
CHP officers quickly got help from the emu's owner, who arrived on the scene, and "we managed to safely corral their feathery friend."
Emus running loose may be a novelty here in the US, but the Australian birds frequently cause havoc on roads in Australia. The BBC shared video from a police chase last month in Nashdale, in New South Wales, in which an emu got loose and was outrunning officers and causing traffic delays.
