Galveston officials are advising residents and visitors to plan ahead for street and road closures on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18. Several events are scheduled, including ARToberfest, two cycling events, the Third Coast Pride Parade and the Toughest 10K.
ARToberfest Galveston
Artoberfest returns for its 25th year Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Streets will be closed from noon Friday through 8 p.m. Sunday on Postoffice Street between 21st and 23rd streets, and on 22nd Street between Market and Church streets.
The Beach Girl Triathlon
The triathlon is scheduled for 7-9 a.m. Saturday, primarily on the grounds of the Holiday Inn Seaside Resort at 19320 FM 3005. The bicycle portion will use the shoulder of FM 3005/San Luis Pass Road between Kahala Drive and First Street. Police will briefly stop traffic at U-turn and finish points to let cyclists cross; no lane closures are expected.
Bike Around the Bay
Bike Around the Bay is a two-day, 170-mile ride, returning Saturday. Riders arriving by ferry are expected to travel from the landing along Harborside Drive, 25th Street and Seawall Boulevard to 81st Street, then continue to Moody Gardens.
While riders are on the Seawall, the south parking lane and the south lane of eastbound traffic from 25th to 81st streets will be restricted to cyclists. Vehicles will be able to travel in both directions, though eastbound traffic in that stretch will be reduced to one lane until cyclists clear the route.
Bike Around the Island
This ride begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Moody Gardens and is expected to finish by 1 p.m. Riders will use Lockheed Road, Piper Street, 83rd Street, Stewart Road and FM 3005/San Luis Pass Road before turning around near the end of the island.
Toughest 10K
The Toughest 10K is set for 7:30-10 a.m. Sunday, with the course running primarily along the I-45 Causeway between the Galveston County Daily News at 8522 Teichman Road and a turnaround on Tiki Island. Lane closures begin at 6:45 a.m. and will reopen after the race. Affected areas include the I-45 southbound turn lane and adjacent lane, the Teichman Road exit ramp, portions of the feeder road, Lewis Lane, 89th Street and Teichman Road.
Third Coast Pride Parade
The parade will bring rolling closures to downtown Galveston from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The parade will begin and end at 25th Street and Santa Fe Place, completing two loops along 25th, Mechanic, 21st and Strand streets. A family area is planned at Hendley Green near 21st and Strand.
