Jen Rosenstein and Sarah Rose Hyland’s new exhibition “The Family Portrait” opens tonight at 2413 Hyperion in Silver Lake.
“The Family Portrait” is a “collision” of the couple’s two worlds: Rosenstein is often found behind a camera shooting for commercial sets and high-energy rock stars and Hyland focuses on live improv and character work.

Rosenstein’s portfolio consists of portraits of prominent music artists such as Pentatonix, Jennifer Hudson, Sam Smith and Maroon 5, along with political figures like Kamala Harris.
In an artist statement, the two say the collection was “born from Sarah’s creative direction and humor, executed through Jen’s camera, and then transformed back onto Sarah’s canvases.” The pieces play with the familiarity of the American tradition of a Sears Photo studio portrait.

The process for this collection began with Jen’s intimate self-portraits. In “The Family Portrait,” she breaks out of her comfort zone of her usual polished subjects and instead captures the raw, the vulnerable, and the sometimes humorous balance of the world. In the artist statement, they describe how their work draws inspiration from fine-photographer Catherine Opie and self-portraiture and performative photography Cindy Sherman. From there, the photography is blown up onto massive large-scale canvases by Sarah, magnifying the theatrics of these captured moments through vivid and evocative brushwork.
“Ultimately, this exhibition is a visual dialogue of our marriage—a world that is twice observed, constantly negotiated, and beautifully transformed.”
