Chicago Sinfonietta sets dates for 2027 MLK tribute, but season is still paused

The Chicago Sinfonietta will return in January with two MLK tribute concerts, performing work by Chicago-based composer Jessie Montgomery, following a pause in programming due to financial challenges.

“Soul Force: Annual Dr. King Celebration & Benefit,” announced on Wednesday, will take place Jan. 15 and 16 at Wentz Hall in Naperville and the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in the Loop. The shows will feature guest soloist Kai Isoke Ali-Landing, on violin, and guest conductor Lauren Smith, an alumnus of the organization’s fellowship program.

Led by Music Director Mei-Ann Chen, the group will play Montgomery’s “Soul Force,” a one-movement piece including elements of big-band jazz, funk, hip-hop and R&B.

“With this year’s program, we celebrate the power of music to unite generations, honor the voices and traditions that shape our city, and remind us of the joy we can create when we come together,” CEO Sidney Jackson said in a statement. “That spirit of hope, possibility, and collective action is at the heart of Chicago Sinfonietta.”

No other shows have been scheduled for the Chicago Sinfonietta, which halted operations and laid off its seven administrative staffers in May. Citing dwindling attendance and audience contributions post-COVID-19 pandemic, management said the organization has entered a “strategic renewal period.” The MLK concerts will serve as a fundraiser. Tickets will start at $38; premium $150 sales will include a $55 contribution to the group.

Following the expiration of a three-year labor agreement, the Chicago Sinfonietta and the players’ union — the Chicago Federation of Musicians — signed a one-year contract in August. The union said it will return to the table in March to negotiate a new, three-year contract.

Founded in 1987 by Paul Freeman, the Chicago Sinfonietta advances equity in classical music by championing diverse players and composers. Tickets for the MLK shows go on sale Nov. 5 at chicagosinfonietta.org.
