A dog was killed by burglars who stole a safe Thursday morning at a residence in North Hollywood before they were arrested at the end of two separate police chases, the LAPD told NBC4 Investigates.
Police responded to the residence at about 3 a.m. after a report of a hot prowl burglary near Farmdale Avenue and Kittridge Street. The burglars entered the home as its occupants were sleeping and encountered the dog, police said.
The burglars stomped on the dog named Leia, fatally injuring the animal, the LAPD said.
The burglars then entered a separate building at the rear of the property, stole a safe and left in two vehicles. After two separate pursuits, four suspected burglars were taken into custody and the safe was recovered, the LAPD said.
One of the individuals had a firearm, police said.
The suspects were arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and felony animal cruelty. Details about their identities were not immediately available.
